On Monday, March 17, students met to prepare for the upcoming event on Tuesday, March 25 known as Catholic Youth Advocacy Network Day or CYAN for short. Approximately 30 students have been selected to participate in the trip to Sacramento where they will attend advocacy workshops organized by other high schools and then visit local legislators—which include Assemblyman Paul Fong, Assemblyman Bob Weickowski, Assemblyman Luis Alejo, Assemblywoman Nora Campos, Assemblyman Rich Gordon, and Senator Jim Beall—to encourage their support on various bills. These bills correlate to the five issues taken on in the beginning of the school year: education, the criminal justice system, homelessness, foster care, and human trafficking. At CYAN, members from each group will be meeting with at least one legislature to present the talking points they have prepared for the event in the hopes of promoting change on these issues. As of today, the talking points for each group are nearing finalization and will soon be ready to present on March 25th.
